Hawker Typhoon

The Typhoon had a slightly bumpy entry into service - there were some structural issues and initially some teething problems with the new Napier Sabre, a behemoth of an engine with 24 sleeve-valve cylinders. The Sabre was such a monster of an internal combustion engine that aircrew had to use oxygen from the moment of engine start.

But these problems were remedied to make the Typhoon one of the RAF's most successful low-level interceptors and ground attack aircraft. She became an excellent counter for the Fw 190, which had seriously challenged the Spitfire Mk V.
